Today is 27th anniversary of ADA – Americans with Disabilities Act. On the photo above is me giving a presentation last year about accessibility at a local event that happened to be on the anniversary of ADA. The slide on the photo says: “Good people do not need laws to tell them to act responsibly, while bad people will find a way around the laws.” It’s Plato’s quote and my favorite.
I had no deaf role models when growing up, so Wonder Woman was among the few role models – real and fictional, living and dead – that I looked up to. There are other female super heroines like Super Girl, Catwoman, and others, but for some reasons Wonder Woman unconsciously has had such a powerful hold on me and has been my favorite female superhero.
When hearing words “disability” and “accessibility”, the first thing that comes up in many people’s minds is a wheelchair or someone sitting in one. Many accessibility resources use a wheelchair icon as a symbol to represent accessibility.
